FamFood
Research, recommend, reconnect through food
A social-first food app where users share experiences, discover what friends are eating, learn about nutrition, and earn rewards - turning food into a community experience.
The Problem: Food Apps Focus On Orders, Not People
Most food platforms today are optimised for ordering and logistics, not for the experience and community around food.
The gaps I saw:
- No central place to collect and share food experiences (photos, recipes, reviews) with the people who actually matter: your friends and "fam"
- Discovery is driven by ratings and ads instead of trusted social recommendations from your own network
- Very little education around food and diet, so even heavy app users don't necessarily make better or healthier choices
- Users rarely feel rewarded for the content and feedback they create; reviews are treated as free labour, not value creation
I wanted FamFood to flip this: make the user's love of food and their social graph the centre of the product.
The Solution: FamFood As A Social Food Layer
FamFood is positioned as a social-first food app where you research, recommend, and reconnect with your friends through food.
At its core, FamFood enables users to:
- Share food photos, recipes, and experiences with their social network
- Discover what their friends are currently "binge-eating" or cooking
- Learn more about food and diet science through a built-in Knowledge Hub
- Earn rewards in the form of FamCoins for their engagement and contributions
Instead of only being a place where you place orders, FamFood becomes the home feed for your food life—where taste, content, and community come together.
Key Features
Research & recommend your favourites: Users can rate dishes, like content, and write detailed comments about neighbourhood gems or discovered recipes, turning personal experiences into structured, useful signals for others.
Explore what the fam is eating: A feed where you can see what your friends are enjoying, where they're eating, and which recipes they are trying out.
Learn & grow through a Knowledge Hub: A dedicated in-app section to read and understand food and diet science so users can make better food decisions and become healthier over time.
Incentivise with FamCoins and rewards: Every review, like, and comment earns FamCoins, which users can redeem to play games or unlock discount coupons from partner brands like TagZ, OvenStory, Behrouz Biryani, Faasos, Taco Bell, and Domino's.
FamFood-Partner: The Brand-Facing Layer
To complete the ecosystem, we built FamFood-Partner, a separate web app focused on brands who want to partner with FamFood.
FamFood-Partner solves for:
- Explaining clearly why brands should join FamFood as a niche sales channel
- Showcasing how FamFood helps them launch coupon campaigns targeted at highly engaged, food-loving communities
- Presenting FamFood as a platform to scale their business and build brand-loyal communities
Tech Stack:
- Main FamFood app: Flutter + Firebase
- FamFood-Partner: React + Firebase + TailwindCSS + React-Bootstrap
Ecosystem: Users, Brands, And Value Flow
Users:
- Share content, reviews, and recipes
- Learn about food through the Knowledge Hub
- Earn FamCoins and redeem them for rewards and coupons
Partner Brands:
- Gain access to a curated, food-obsessed user base
- Run targeted coupon campaigns and drive brand engagement
- Build deeper, community-like relationships with users
FamFood (the platform):
- Becomes the bridge between authentic user-generated food content and brand campaigns
- Uses rewards and education to make the ecosystem sustainable and healthier
Market Validation
Hogr (2023) - Raised ₹10Cr from Curefoods building on a similar thesis: a social-first food discovery app where users share experiences and discover restaurants through their social network. Their traction validates that consumers want food discovery to be social, not just transactional.
Why This Matters
FamFood represents thinking beyond single-user apps and into ecosystems.
This project taught me:
- How to design for both consumers (social food app) and businesses (partner web app) in one connected system
- How gamification (FamCoins, rewards) can align user behaviour with brand outcomes
- How content, education, and incentives can combine to nudge people towards better food decisions, not just more consumption
This shows how I approached building a community-driven, multi-sided product, starting from a simple sketch and shipping it as a real, usable experience.
